Trip report: South Africa, Fairest Cape to Kruger (Nov 2012) by Tropical Birding

Guided by Josh Engel.

Although this was a custom tour, it followed closely the itinerary of our set departure tour. It was a great tour covering both the endemic-filled Western Cape, which yielded South Africa’s majestic national bird, the stately Blue Crane, along with Cape Rockjumper and the adorable Africa Penguin. Over on the eastern side of the country Kruger and animals took center stage, with a rare sighting of a pack of African Wild Dogs, the Big Five, and a crazy night drive that produced four cat sightings: African Wild Cat, Leopard, Lion, and a lanky Serval. It was great to be back in a country I used to call home, and see again the extraordinary birds and mammals of one of Africa’s flagship destinations.
