Trip report: Japan in Winter, Birding on Ice (Feb 2013) by Tropical Birding

Guided by Keith Barnes.

Earth can have no better winter birding destination than Japan. From the Japanese Alps to the Alaska-like seascapes of Hokkaido, powder snow and stark wild woodlands lend a dramatic backdrop to some of the finest avian spectacles on the planet. This, combined with quaint minshuku living, and a choice of food that was as delicious as it was variable, lent itself to an overwhelming kaleidoscope of experiences… from snow monkeys to dancing cranes, from excellent pelagic birding to sipping sake while watching Blakiston’s Fish Owl.
