Trip report: Madagascar, The Eighth Continent (Nov 2015) by Tropical Birding

Guided by Ken Behrens. This was a custom tour that was very similar to our normal set-departure tour, plus the Helmet Vanga extension.

This was yet another highly successful custom trip in Madagascar, with Tropical Birding’s satellite office in the country making sure that things ran smoothly despite Air Madagascar’s best efforts to stop us! We recorded most of the island’s endemic birds, 42 mammals (of which 25 were lemurs), 52 reptiles (including 12 chameleons), 38 amphibians, and 160 spiders thanks to the arachnidological expertise of one expedition member! Starting in the totally unique spiny forest of the southwest, we crossed the High Plateau, then explored the mountain rainforests of the east, and finally the lowland rainforest of the northeast, plus the mangroves, littoral scrub, offshore islands, rocky escarpments, tidal shores, and every other micro habitat in between.
