Trip report: Madagascar Custom Tour (Nov 2017) by Tropical Birding

Guided by Ken Behrens. This was a custom tour that was very similar to our normal set-departure tour, including the Northwestern Endemics and Helmet Vanga extensions.

This was yet another highly successful custom trip in Madagascar, with Tropical Birding’s satellite office in the country making sure that things ran smoothly. We recorded the majority of the island’s endemic birds, and 191 bird species overall, 39 species of mammals (mostly lemurs), and 57 reptiles (including 15 chameleons), 32 species frogs, and 47 flavors of butterfly. Just a few of the myriad highlights included Madagascar Cuckoo-Roller, Scaly and Long-tailed Ground-Rollers, Schlegel’s Asity, three species of mesites, Red and Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs, Indri, Greater and Golden Bamboo Lemurs, Dumeril’s and Eastern Madagascar Tree Boas, Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko, and Baron’s and Climbing Mantellas.

We started in the dry forest and mangrove estuaries of the northwest. Next, we visited the totally unique spiny forest of the southwest. Then we crossed the High Plateau, and plunged into the eastern rainforest, where we spent the remainder of the trip. Along the way, we thoroughly savored Madagascar’s wonderful hotels, fine French / Malagasy cuisine, and fascinating culture.
