Trip report: Madagascar Custom Tour (Oct 2019) by Tropical Birding

Guided by Ken Behrens. This was a custom tour, with an itinerary identical to the set-departure main tour.

This was yet another highly successful custom trip in Madagascar, with Tropical Birding’s satellite office in the country making sure that things ran smoothly. We recorded the majority of the island’s endemic birds, and 166 bird species overall, 23 species of mammals (mostly lemurs), and 29 reptiles (including 9 chameleons), 12 species frogs, and 44 flavors of butterfly. Just a few of the myriad highlights included Madagascar Cuckoo-Roller, Scaly and Long-tailed Ground-Rollers, Velvet Asity, two species of mesites, Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur, Indri, Golden Bamboo Lemurs,Eastern Madagascar Tree Boa, and Mossy and Sameiti Leaf-tailed Geckos.

We started in the totally unique spiny forest of the southwest. Then we crossed the High Plateau, and plunged into the eastern rainforest, where we spent the remainder of the trip. Along the way, we thoroughly savored Madagascar’s wonderful hotels, fine French / Malagasy cuisine, and fascinating culture.
