Trip report: Ecuador – Amazing Amazon (Jun-Jul 2021) by Tropical Birding

Guided by Jose Illanes. This was a set departure tour.

This trip covered the main tour, focusing on the riches of the Amazon, and combined it with custom extensions into another part of the Amazon (for Harpy Eagle at a nest site), and to other cloudforest and high Andean sites to add yet more birds. When we looked back on the trip we had many special birds, although these were the ones highlighted by the group as particularly memorable: Harpy and Crested Eagles, Hoatzin, Sunbittern, Bare-faced and Scarlet Ibises, White-Plumed, Yellow-browed, Black-and-white Antbirds, Plum-throated Cotinga, Ladder-tailed Nightjar, Scarlet Macaw, Orange-fronted Plushcrown, Castelnau’s and Cocha Antshrikes, Azure Gallinule, Wire-tailed Manakin and White-lored Antpitta. Our total species seen were 475, with a further 48 only heard.
