Trip report: Costa Rica custom tour (Jan 2016) by Tropical Birding

Guided by Cameron Cox. This was a custom tour.

The natural beauty of Costa Rica bursts from every corner of this small but diverse Central American paradise. From humid lowland rainforests to mountaintops above tree line, to placid Pacific beaches with deep blue water, to vibrant cloud forests brimming with life, it is a country of contrasts packed into a compact and accessible area. On this trip we were focused particularly on getting great views of some of the most striking birds of this gorgeous country, on getting photographs whenever possible, and to generally immersing ourselves in and enjoying the natural beauty of this world-class nature tourism destination. We enjoyed many of the classic Costa Rican birds like Scarlet Macaw, Keel-billed Toucan, Boat-billed Heron, Crested Guan, and of course one of the most celebrated birds in the world, the unsurpassable Resplendent Quetzal. The entire experience is much more than even these showcase species though. It is more than just birds but also spider monkeys foraging in the treetops, watching a sloth in the rain, basking American Crocodiles, and the impressive voices of howler monkeys echoing through the forest. The forests themselves were part of the experience, towering trees covered in exotic air plants and flowers. Crystal clear mountain streams and waterfalls punctuate the scenery. Costa Rica’s natural beauty, the hospitality of its people, and the constantly changing kaleidoscope of amazing birdlife made this trip a pure pleasure.
