HOW TO GET TO GUAPI ASSU BIRD LODGE.

BY AIR. There are daily connections to Rio de Janeiro from all major cities in the world, direct or via São Paulo. Most flights arrive early in the morning, but a few (such as Aerolinas Argentinas and Air France) arrive midday or evening. Book in advance, and there will be a car waiting for you at the airport.

BY CAR. You can get to us in any standard sedan (you do NOT need a 4WD). Head out of Rio de Janeiro on the “Linha Vermelha” to the “Região Grande Serrana” and follow the signs Petropolis /Teresopolis via the BR040. Later leave the BR040 and turn right to continue in the direction of Magé/Teresopolis on the BR493. After 37km you will arrive at Parada Modelo where you will leave the BR493 and turn right just before a flyover to continue in the direction of Novo Friburgo/Cachoeiras de Macacu on the RJ122.

At Km 32 you will arrive at a speed trap near a Gasoline Station with the name Shogun. There you will turn left on a dirt road in the direction of Guapiaçu (look for signs Cascatai Agua Mineral). After 15 km you will arrive at a bifurcation where you will turn left and down. Continue for 500 meters, after which you will pass a concrete bridge and the road will make a sharp turn to the right. Continue another 300 meters and turn left following the main track.

After 300 meters you will pass a small bridge over a ditch, turn right immediately after and you will the Reserva Ecologica de Guapiaçu and continue the track passing several farm buildings and drive up the hill, on the top you will find the Guapi Assu Bird Lodge.

BY BUS. You can catch one of the regular buses from the Rio de Janeiro main bus terminal. A company called 1001 (mille e um) maintains a regular service to Novo Friburgo (5$). Get off at the bus station in Cachoeiras de Macacu and jump on the Colletivo Guapiaçu in the direction of Areal (1$). There are only three busses a day, the last one leaving at 17.00. Ask the bus driver to drop you off at Reserva Ecologica de Guapiaçu or REGUA and walk the last 500 meters to the Guapi Assu Bird Lodge. You can also take a taxi from Cachoeiras de Macacu. Ask for “Radio Taxi Mauro” at the bus station and tell him to take you to REGUA (10$).
