Owls and Warblers in May
Raptors and Sparrows in December
Hummingbirds
Southeast
Arizona offers some of the most exciting birding in all of North
America. The "Sky Islands", forest-clad mountains jutting up
impressively out of the stark surrounding deserts, are home to loads of
spectacular species that otherwise only occur south of the border.
Hummers often top the list of visiting birders "most-wanteds", with
beauties like Magnificent , Blue-throated , White-eared,
Lucifer, and Berylline are some of the dozen or so possibilities, but
other highlights can include Elegant Trogon, Olive and Red-faced
Warblers, Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, Whiskered Screech-Owl, and the
very real possiblity of an extreme rarity from the south.
The
deserts and grasslands, crossed by lush riparian areas and dotted by a
few ponds and wetlands, also hold an impressive variety of birds. The
winter tour especially concentrates on these areas, as they can be
teeming with sparrows and finches and loaded with over-wintering
raptors.
