South Texas: Birding the Border
South Texas Birds & Butterflies
The
golden-bellied kiskadees, emerald-coated Green Kingfishers, and
resplendent Green Jays may suggest the tropics, but a mere day’s
drive along the Gulf Coast brings you into the realm of Loggerhead
Shrikes, Swainson’s Warblers, White-tailed Hawks, and
Scissor-tailed Flycatchers. Welcome to Texas, a birder’s dream
come true! From the juniper-covered Edwards Plateau harboring the
enigmatic Golden-cheeked Warbler, to the Upper Texas Coast’s
spring migration sensation, to the banks of the rarity-spawning Rio
Grande, Texas is an absolute avian wonderland.
Spring migration on the Upper Texas Coast is legendary. Shorebirds,
gulls, and terns erupt from the south, filling the shorelines and
farmlands, and neotropical passerines swarm and crowd patches of
woodlands in what is surely one of the most astounding spectacles of
spring migration in America. South Texas delights with a tantalizing
taste of the tropics as White-collared Seedeaters, Ringed Kingfishers,
Buff-bellied Hummingbirds, and Olive Sparrows skirt over the border
just far enough to hit the lists of elated stateside birders. West
Texas surrenders even more enchantment in the form of Colima Warbler
and the smart-looking Black-capped Vireo.
In
2008, we began offering short migration breaks on the Upper Texas
Coast. All of our migration trips, short or long, will be running with
the most up-to-date information on fallouts and rarities as a result of
our new Birders' Information Center, located at High Island.
