"The Jocotoco Birdathon"
September 8-17 2006
Leaders: José Illanes and Scott Olmstead
Participants:

Violet-bellied Hummingbird (Scott Olmstead)
We ran this tour at a discount of $7,000 in order to raise funds for Jocotoco
Foundation, an Ecuadorian conservation organization established to protect the
country's threatened biodiversity. Jocotoco accomplishes this goal by purchasing
important tracts of land and managing them as private ecological reserves. All
tour participants made a $500 donation to Jocotoco (included in the tour price)
and also secured additional donation pledges from friends and family in the
US. The tour was designed to focus on two important Jocotoco reserves in southern
Ecuador. The first, Tapichalaca, is set in lush cloud forest high on the east
slope of the Andes. The other, Buenaventura, protects foothill forest on the
west slope. By visiting these areas, tour participants could see firsthand many
of the birds that Jocotoco is helping to protect, including two of the flagship
species for conservation in Ecuador: Jocotoco Antpitta and Long-wattled Umbrellabird.
In the end, the tour raised about $13,000 for Jocotoco Foundation, a solid success.
Somewhere along the way, we managed to see over 340 birds, take in some breathtaking
Andean scenery, and turn "hemispingus" into a dirty word!

Tour Summary
9 September: We left Quito early and after a quick flight to Catamayo we got our first looks at Pacific Parrotlet, Long-tailed Mockingbird, Croaking Ground-Dove, and others, right outside the airport. Birding our way out of town, we picked up Drab, Chestnut-throated, and Parrot-billed Seedeaters, and everyone had their first looks at the striking Fasciated Wren. As we climbed into the arid hills we made a stop for Tumbes Sparrow and the handsome Band-tailed Sierra-Finch. Our lunch in Vilcabamba produced Gray-chinned Hermit, and the highland alticola race of Amazilia Hummingbird, right at the restaurant. After lunch we continued on our way south, making a few stops in the arid woodland for a large group of Hooded Siskins, a Pacific Pygmy-Owl, and an Andean Slaty-Thrush. Late in the afternoon as we passed through the low elfin forest of Podocarpus National Park, we found a good mixed flock which contained our first Lacrimose Mountain-Tanagers, a Golden-crowned Tanager, and a beautiful Rufous-chested Tanager. We arrived at Tapichalaca just before dusk, with enough time to see a few of the regular hummers like Amethyst-throated and Flame-throated Sunangels, Collared Inca, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, and Rufous-capped Thornbill. The end of the day was the first of many superb feasts, served in the cozy comfort of Tapichalaca's Casa Simpson guesthouse.
10 September: Our morning activity was a hike that started at the Quebrada Honda trail and climbed up and over the ridge and back to the lodge on the Tangara trail. Among the highlights were Yellow-bellied and Rufous-breasted Chat-Tyrants, a very bold pair of White-browed Spinetails, Slate-crowned Antpitta, and a group of about five spectacular Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucans. Our main target for the morning was the very local Jocotoco Antpitta, the impetus for the creation of Tapichalaca Reserve, and the bird that gives the Jocotoco Foundation its name. It took a little work, but in the end all group members had a look at this colossal Grallaria; we likely saw at least three individuals. After lunch we set out to bird the road south toward Valladolid, but didn't make it very far, owing to the birding along the way. Green-and-black Fruiteater, Barred Becard, Rufous-tailed Tyrant were good sightings, as was a Tawny-bellied Hermit.
11 September: Before breakfast we got off to a good start when a Rufous Antpitta was seen from the blind near the lodge, and a few early-risers found a female Swallow-tailed Nightjar foraging outside the lodge. For the morning we concentrated on the same trails as the previous day, hoping to pick up a few missing species, but our efforts were hampered by the weather. Despite the steady rain, we did manage to find a flock with Plushcap, Rufous Wren, and Pale-naped Brush-Finch. After returning to the lodge for lunch and a rest, we set out for the afternoon. It proved much more successful, and we stayed mostly dry as we birded the main road above the lodge. Buff-breasted Mountain-Tanager and Gray-hooded Bush-Tanager pushed our tanager list upward. A group of Bearded Guans showed extremely well, and Chusquea Tapaculo allowed unexpectedly good looks as it skulked along the roadside. A White-throated Hawk seen in flight and then later perched was certainly a trip highlight, as this species is always unpredictable.

12 September: A stunning Crimson-mantled Woodpecker was one of the first birds of the day, seen right outside the lodge. We spent the morning birding the main road down toward Valladolid and had good luck with mixed flocks. Tanagers were the main event, and we saw Flame-faced, Metallic-green, Saffron-crowned, and Grass-green, as well as the localized Yellow-whiskered Bush-Tanager. After lunch we drove straight down to Valladolid; arriving at this lower elevation we encountered a slew of species new for the trip, including Marañon Thrush, Rufous-fronted Thornbird, Yellow-cheeked Becard, and Golden-eared, Silver-beaked, and Blue-necked Tanagers. Obscure flycatchers provided a challenge to our identification skills, and in addition to Olive-chested Flycatcher and Sierran Elaenia, we encountered a migrant Contopus that we finally identified as Western Wood-Pewee, and a difficult Empidonax that we could only call a "Traill's" Flycatcher.
13 September: We left Tapichalaca early, planning for some high elevation birding in the Cordillera de Sabanilla section of Podocarpus National Park. Going over the pass at about 2,700m, the weather was menacing, and at first we found little activity in the fog and wind. Finding a sheltered spot on the leeward side of the pass, we were able to turn up a Mouse-colored Thistletail that gave us great looks, and then an Andean Snipe flushed up as we returned to the bus. A bit further along the road we had out first look at the beautiful Glowing Puffleg, and sighted a couple Black-headed Hemispinguses in a mixed flock. Another trip highlight was just around the bend, and after some searching, we had fantastic scope views of a large, noisy flock of Golden-plumed Parakeets feeding on palm nuts. Not bad for a travel day! The road across the Andes was long and winding, and we arrived at Buenaventura Reserve just after dark.
14 September: The birding was fast and furious on our first morning at Buenaventura, which was ostensibly dedicated to finding Long-wattled Umbrellabird. What seemed like one big mixed flock lasting for hours was probably a bit overwhelming for some! Highlights were too numerous to list in full, but I will try to cover a few. Spotted Nightingale-Thrush remained elusive but was seen by most in the end. A responsive pair of Song Wrens gave us extraordinary looks, perching out in full view. Colorful Chocó endemics such as Club-winged Manakin and Pale-mandibled Araçari, here near the southern limit of their range, were crowd favourites. A pair of Slaty-winged Foliage-Gleaners accompanying a mixed flock were a rare treat, as was a Western Woodhaunter in the same flock. Brownish Twistwing and Thrush-like Schiffornis, scarce West of the Andes, were unexpected sightings. And not to be forgotten was an impressive pair of Guayaquil Woodpeckers. Finally, late in the morning we found a spectacular male Long-wattled Umbrellabird, with an outrageous wattle that hung several inches below his perch. This bird was very confiding and we silently watched him from close range for nearly a half hour. During lunch a few Red-masked Parakeets flew right by the dining room, heading up the valley, and then a Pacific Pygmy-Owl was seen loitering nearby, keeping an eye on the hummingbird feeders. After lunch we drove up to the "upper road", just above the current reserve boundary, hoping to find El Oro Parakeet. On the way up we spotted Laughing Falcon and the Tumbesian endemic Gray-backed Hawk. The afternoon did not produce the parakeets, but we did find Common Bush-Tanager, Ochre-breasted Tanager, Collared Trogon, and Loja Tyrannulet. A migrant Barn Swallow was a rare find for the area. Driving back to the lodge at dusk, José spotted a Spectacled Owl perched by the road, and everyone got a look in the fading light. We finished the day with over 110 species seen.

Pacific Pygmy-Owl (Scott Olmstead)
15 September: We began the day by driving up to upper valley, and spent the morning hiking down the Dianitas road. Crimson-rumped Toucanets and Rufous-headed Chachalacas were a great start. A pair of b showed very well, and shortly thereafter we picked up Uniform and Russet Antshrikes and Brown-billed Scythebill moving with mixed flocks. Bronze-winged Parrot was finally seen well, perched atop a snag in the sun and Booted Racket-tail, Violet-tailed Sylph, and Wedge-billed Hummingbird pushed us over 30 hummingbird species. During lunch we had more time to admire the swarm of hummers frequenting the dining room nectar feeders, including Violet-bellied Hummingbird, Green Thorntail, Baron's and White-whiskered Hermits, White-necked Jacobin, and Brown Violet-ear. Later in the afternoon, most of the group birded the entrance road to the reserve where we saw Scarlet-backed Woodpecker, Gray-cheeked Parakeet, and the local dark-eyed aequatorialis race of Yellow-olive Flatbill, among others. At the upper hummingbird feeding station we had better looks at the dazzling Emerald-bellied Woodnymph, and also picked up a male Purple-bibbed Whitetip.
16 September: On our final day or birding we started with another ride up to the upper road, where we again missed El Oro Parakeet. But our efforts were rewarded by knock-out looks at a Fasciated Tiger-Heron prowling the river. We also managed scope views of Andean Solitaire, and a Gray-headed Kite was seen well overhead. By mid-morning we had left the Buenaventura area behind and were headed for Guayaquil. We stopped in the scrubby arid woodland along the main highway for Peruvian Meadlowlark, and then pulled off at a shrimp farm near Santa Rosa to look for water birds. It was a very productive stop, as we turned up a dozen shorebirds including Wilson's and Collared Plovers, two Baird's Sandpipers, and a couple of Stilt Sandpipers. Wattled Jaçana, White-cheeked Pintail, and Cocoi Heron were seen and six Roseate Spoonbills flew right overhead. A diminutive Short-tailed Field-Tyrant was also sighted dashing around the edges of the pools, and several Lesser Nighthawks were discovered roosting in a newly plowed field. Finally, a few hours later as we passed through the Manglares-Churute Reserve approaching Guayaquil, we spotted two Horned Screamers from the main highway. A new family for many participants, and a nice end to the tour!
