NORTHERN ECUADOR
13 February - 01 March 2002

Leader: Nick Athanas, with Oscar Tapuy at Sacha

Participants:
Allen Hale
Ray Gribble
Malcolm Rains

Another fun trip to Northern Ecuador with Tropical Birding. Three good friends from Norfolk joined us for a fortnight of great birds, the best lodges, and lots of good food. Even though it rained part of every day of the trip, the birding was generally excellent, with some nice highlights like Plate-billed and Black-billed Mountain-Toucans, Coppery-chested Jacamar (pictured at right), fantastically close views of a male Lyre-tailed Nightjar, 72 tanagers including Black-chested Mountain-Tanager, Moss-backed Tanager, and Blue-browed Tanager, 47 hummingbirds, and a diminutive but very entertaining Gray-breasted Crake.

The trip to Sacha did not run as smoothly as it normally does, because the airports in the Amazon were closed due to local protests. The folks at Sacha went out of their way to get their passengers down to the lodge, but this entailed very long and arduous bus and boat journeys. The group lost a lot of time at Sacha to travelling, but made the best of their short time there. With the help of Sacha's superb guide Oscar Tapuy, they each managed to make their target of 500 species for the trip, and left very happy with the tour.

Unfortunately I didn't have the time to write up a complete trip report, but I did include the itinerary and bird list.
