Trip summary and checklist
Leader: Keith Barnes
Participants: Brian Penney & Jacquie Budd
July and August are typically thought of as months to avoid birding in southern Africa as it is the austral winter and many intra-african and palearctic migrants are not present. This trip report indicates how wrong that perception is and how superb the deserts of Namibia and South Africa can be at this time. Despite the absence of many "summer" birds we had superb mammal and bird viewing, recording over 400 species (394 seen by the clients) including a clean sweep of all of Namibia’s endemics and near-endemics as well as a huge proportion of South Africa’s endemics and birds restricted to the dry west. The other bonus of travelling in this area at this time is that the often oppressive summer heat was absent, and the days were superbly comfortable, generally between 20-26°C (70-80°F).
There were many birding highlights on this trip, but it would be hard to beat the fleeting but conclusive views Jackie got of the Striped Flufftail (the third time Tropical Birding has located this mega-difficult bird for a client!!). We also stuck gold with mega-views of the more common, but often also elusive Red-chested Flufftail in Knysna. The western Cape served up its usual bevy of endemic beauties including Jackass Penguin, Blue Crane, Cape Rockjumper, Ground Woodpecker, Cinnamon-breasted (Kopje) Warbler, Chorister Robin and many others. The dry desert trip proved to be excellent for bustards, yielding eight species including five endemics and near endemics, Kori, Ludwig's and Stanley’s Bustard, Karoo, Rueppell's, Red-crested, Black and White-quilled (Korhaans) Bustards. Larks were another important component of the avifauna and we racked up 20 species, including a host of localised and scarce endemics such as Barlow’s Lark, Benguela Long-billed Lark and the globally threatened Red Lark and both Dune and Gray’s larks in Namibia. Erongo yielded most of the Namibian escarpment specialities including views of the skittish Hartlaub’s Francolin, Carp’s Black Tit, Rueppell’s Parrot and the immaculate White-tailed Shrike (now thought to be a terrestrial Batis!). Other small gems abound here including Rosy-faced Lovebird, Violet-eared and Black-cheeked Waxbills. Etosha delivered Bare-cheeked Babbler and Violet Woodhoopoe. After a fair bit of searching, we located the local Herero Chat at Spitskoppe.
The Okavango floodplains yielded a pair of Wattled Crane with a chick, Rufous-bellied Heron and the globally threatened Slaty Egret, while the African Skimmers building scrapes for their nests were also very welcome. Several passerines with ranges centred on the Okavango were also gripped including White-rumped Babbler and Chirping Cisticola. The broadleaved woodland surrounding Rundu also yielded some species that are difficult to see in Namibia such as White-headed (Arnot’s) Black Chat, Green-capped Eremomela, Rufous-bellied Tit and White-breasted Cuckooshrike.
The mammal viewing was nothing short of spectacular and we managed to see 46 species. The undoubted highlight was several confiding Aardwolf in the northern Cape. Other special moments included Honey Badger digging away in broad daylight, not to mention the waterholes at Etosha which teemed with thronging antelope. One evening 16 Black Rhinoceros came to the Okakeujo waterhole, and had a rough time getting a drink because 44 Elephants had taken siege of it. In the Caprivi we saw the rare and magical Sable as well as the threatened Roan.
Itinerary

24 July: Cape Town to De Hoop. We traverse the Hottentot’s Holland mountains, stopping at Sir Lowry’s Pass overlooking False Bay. From here we drove a circuitous route across the Agulhas Plain to De Hoop Nature Reserve. Overnight near De Hoop NR.
25 July: De Hoop to Knysna. We started the morning at De Hoop, looking for our final birds in this habitat before heading off to the wetlands and forests of Knysna. Overnight Knysna.
26 July: Knysna. We explored the Knysna forests and surrounds. Overnight Knysna.
27 July: Swartberg-Karoo N.P. We made it to the Swartberg Pass just after first light. Dropping over the convoluted pass, we entered the gateway to the Karoo. Overnight Karoo N.P.

29 July: Pofadder Loop. Birded the Bushmanland plains around Aggeneys and Pofadder. Overnight Pofadder.
30 July: Pofadder-Springbok. Passing from Bushmanland into Namaqualand, we explored the plains areas for many of the northern specials it holds. In the afternoon we headed for Port Nolloth and Alexander Bay. Overnight Springbok.
31 July: Springbok-Windhoek. Essentially a driving day, we were able to visit Avis Dam in the late afternoon where we picked up some exciting goodies. Overnight Windhoek.
1 Aug: Windhoek-Walvis. This morning we headed off early for the spectacular scenic journey across the Khomas Hochland and drop into the Namib Desert plains. Overnight in Walvis Bay.
2 Aug: Walvis Bay - Spittskoppe - Erongo In the early morning we headed towards the Spitzkoppe, a series of impressive granite inselbergs rising out of the desert plains. Overnight in Erongo Wilderness Lodge.
3 Aug: Erongo Wilderness Lodge. We woke up early to start exploring this fascinating area. Many of the special birds of this region occur in the immediate vicinity of the lodge. Overnight in Erongo Wilderness Lodge.
4 Aug: Erongo Wilderness Lodge - Etosha N.P. (Okaukuejo). This morning we took our last glimpses at the magical rocky landscape surrounding Erongo Wilderness Lodge before we made our way north to the great Etosha National Park. Overnight at Okaukuejo Camp.
5 Aug: Etosha N.P. (Okaukuejo - Halali). Full day Etosha. Overnight at Halali Camp.

9 Aug: Mahango Game Reserve. Following the Kavango river east towards the Caprivi Strip, we encountered birds typical of the Okavango Delta. The rich teak woodlands in this area support a highly specialised avifauna, many of these typical of the extensive Miombo woodlands of Central Africa. Overnight Popa Falls Camp.
10 Aug: Popa - Rundu. Birded the broadleaved woodlands on the way back to Rundu. Overnight Rundu.
11 Aug: Rundu-Windhoek. Overnight Windhoek.
