Tour Summary

On this tour we covered the Eastern Slope of the Ecuadorian Andes, from top to bottom. We were fortunate to experience drier-than-usual weather throughout the trip and the result was that we lost almost no time to birding – an amazing treat on the very wet East Slope!

Great Horned Owl at Antisana - Scott Olmstead Ecuadorian Hillstar at Antisana - Scott Olmstead

We started in the high Andes near Quito, birding the open plateau at the base of Volcán Antisana on the first day, where we saw just about everything you could ask for and more! The very long list of highlights includes Andean Condor, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Andean Gull, Ecuadorian Hillstar, Streak-backed Canastero, Silvery Grebe, Paramo Pipit, and the elusive Cinereous Harrier. A Great Horned Owl sitting in the open in the middle of the morning was very confiding and a Curve-billed Tinamou running through a recently-plowed field was equally surprising. After a successful day we retired to cozy Guango Lodge on the other side of Papallacta Pass for the night. Tourmaline Sunangel, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Glowing Puffleg, and Chestnut-breasted Coronet were coming in to the feeders.

The next day was spent in the much wetter Papallacta area; around Guango we found Plushcap, Slaty and Stripe-headed Brush-Finches, and Black-capped Hemispingus. We birded as high as 4200m at the pass, where we picked up Blue-mantled Thornbill, Viridian Metaltail, White-chinned Thistletail, and Tawny Antpitta. In a patch of Polylepis forest we caught a big mixed flock with Bar-bellied Woodpecker, Black-backed Bush-Tanager, and Giant Conebill. The elfin forest above the Papallacta Hot Springs produced Red-crested Cotinga, Blue-backed Conebill, and a great look at a group of Black-chested Mountain-Tanagers. We broke up the afternoon ride to our next destination, San Isidro, with a stop to check out a family of Torrent Ducks on the Rio Quijos.

San Isidro is set subtropical cloud forest at about 2000m. Here we found some real gems, including a pair of Variegated Bristle-Tyrants visiting a mossy nest to feed a nestling, and a sharp male Black-chested Fruiteater seen in the scope. At the lodge they’re bringing in White-bellied and Chestnut-crowned Antpittas with worms and we saw both species well. Rufous-crested Tanager, Olive-backed Woodcreeper, Yellow-vented Woodpecker, and Sulphur-bellied Tyrannulet were all found moving with mixed flocks. We also saw Highland Motmot, Golden-headed and Crested Quetzals, Andean Toucanet, and a noisy group of nomadic White-capped Tanagers. San Isidro is a great base for night birding and during our stay we found Andean Potoo, Rufous-banded Owl, White-throated Screech-Owl, and the San Isidro “Mystery Owl”; this latter owl is currently being studied and may proved to be a new species.

From San Isidro we had planned a day trip down to San Rafael Falls on the 28th to look for foothill birds, but... Things started off well, with a nice singing male Lyre-tailed Nightjar at a stop along the way. Then as we neared our destination just after dawn, we were halted by a bridge under unanticipated construction, so we had to change the plan. We started the morning birding a forest patch near the village of Gonzalo Diaz de Piñeda, where we found a huge loosely-organized mixed flock with Gray-mantled Wren, Barred Becard, Ash-browed Spinetail, Marble-faced Bristle-Tyrant, Golden-eared Tanager, and Cerulean Warbler. Near the village of Sardinas we found another good flock, this one with Golden-collared Honeycreeper, Montane Foliage-gleaner, and Rufous-breasted Flycatcher. Heading back to the lodge in the afternoon, we birded the Baeza bypass route and picked up Olivaceous Siskin and Lemon-browed Flycatcher. Not bad for an improvised day!

The Cordillera de los Guacamayos is at a similar elevation to San Isidro but gets a different mix of birds, including species that are typical of lower and higher elevations, often found in the same flock. We birded the trail at Guacamayos on our last morning from San Isidro, and our luck continued, as we picked up Black-billed Mountain-Toucan, Greater Scythebill, Dusky Piha, and Buff-breasted Mountain-Tanager. Turquoise Jay, Andean Guan, and Handsome Flycatcher were also new. Driving down to the foothills, we spent a couple of very productive hours birding near Narupa, with highlights being Lined Antshrike, Olive-chested Flycatcher, Lafresnaye’s Piculet, Olivaceous Greenlet, Black-billed Treehunter, and Dusky Spinetail. It was nearly dusk when we arrived at the banks of the Rio Napo to get the canoe to Casa del Suizo for the night, but the birding wasn’t done just yet. As we traveled the short distance downstream a group of perhaps 200 Sand-colored Nighthawks streamed by heading upstream.

On the 30th Marcelo joined us after breakfast and traveled downriver with us from Casa del Suizo to Sacha Lodge by motorized dugout canoe. In addition to taking in the river scenery, we picked up a few things along the way like Cocoi Heron and Black and Yellow-headed Caracaras. In the afternoon when we arrived at Sacha we birded around the river landing, where we found White-winged Becard and a pair of Orange-fronted Plushcrowns building a nest. Walking along the boardwalk on the way to the lodge, we found a beautiful Cream-colored Woodpecker, a couple of Scarlet-crowned Barbets, and both Great and Common Potoos on day roosts. Late in the afternoon we birded from the dock, watching several Hoatzins and a pair of Straight-billed Woodcreepers.

We had the next four full days to bird around Sacha and the Napo with Marcelo and we were able to hit quite a few different areas, thus maximizing the list. Some of the highlights from the forest around the lodge were Musician Wren, Golden-headed Manakin, Long-billed Woodcreeper, Undulated Tinamou, and Lined Forest-Falcon. A Citron-bellied Attila showed well in the Moriche palm swamp along the boardwalk. (Watch a short video clip of the attila singing here.) Birding the blackwater streams through the flooded várzea forest by canoe we found Orange-crested Manakin, Green-and-rufous Kingfisher, Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Dot-backed Antbird, Rufous-tailed Flatbill, Chestnut-capped Puffbird, White-chinned Jacamar, and a roosting Agami Heron. From the canopy walkway we were better able to see some of the birds that call the high canopy home; here we saw Gilded Barbet, Golden-collared Toucanet, Purplish Jacamar, Ivory-billed Araçari, Dugand’s Antwren, and Plum-throated and Spangled Cotingas.

We made an effort to spend some time on a couple of the bigger islands in the Napo since there are a number of specialty species that are found on the islands and nowhere else. Some of the best birds we turned up on the islands were Lesser Wagtail-Tyrant, Orange-headed Tanager, Black-and-white Antbird, Olive-spotted Hummingbird, White-bellied Spinetail, and Gray-breasted Crake.

We also made a couple of forays to the south bank of the river, where there is more terra firme forest (forest that is not usually flooded) and some different species. On the Providencia Trail we found Brown Nunlet, Gould’s Jewelfront, Wire-tailed Manakin, and a Hairy-crested Antbird seen incredibly close at an anstwarm. We also got a healthy dose of tanagers, with Yellow-bellied, Paradise, Turquoise, and Masked Crimson Tanagers all seen in one flock. On another morning we birded around the famous parrot clay licks in Yasuní National Park. The activity at the licks was some of the best I’ve ever seen, with more than 150 Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlets and at least 50 Orange-cheeked Parrots joining the more regular species like Cobalt-winged Parakeet, Yellow-crowned Amazon, and Blue-headed Parrot. (You can watch a short video clip from our morning at the clay licks here.) The hilly forest around the licks was also productive, and by the end of the morning we had seen quite an impressive list of birds, including Lanceolated Monklet, Red-billed Scythebill, Striped Manakin, Great Jacamar, and a particularly cooperative Yellow-browed Antbird. At a well-attended antswarm we picked up the elegant White-plumed Antbird along with Sooty and Bicolored Antbirds.

Our final afternoon was spent in the wooden canopy tower, where an enthusiastic Lawrence’s Thrush was singing an unending string of mimicked phrases from just above our heads in the top of the giant Ceiba supporting the tower. A Yellow-browed Tody-Flycatcher and a couple Slender-footed Tyrannulets lingered nearby. We watched a soaring Black-and-white Hawk-Eagle from the canoe as we crossed the lagoon.

Even on the last morning as we made our way toward the boat launch along the boardwalk we were still picking up new species, including a pair of Short-tailed Pygmy-Tyrants calling from the subcanopy and a couple of Black-spotted Bare-eyes that zipped across the boardwalk before most of us even knew what was happening! It was that kind of trip – the action just never stopped.
