Tour Summary:

Jan. 7  We left Quito in the dark and headed for our first destination, the Yanacocha Reserve on the northwest slope of Pichincha Volcano. The birding got off to a great start long before we got to the reserve, in the form of a couple of trip highlight birds. A CURVE-BILLED TINAMOU strolling beside the road and a BLACK-CHESTED BUZZARD-EAGLE playfully enjoying the morning breeze got everyone in a good mood right away. The reserve produced the usual excellent mixed flocks of tanagers like SCARLET-BELLIED MOUNTAIN-TANAGERS and SUPERCILIARIED HEMISPINGUSES and tyrannids like WHITE-THROATED TYRANNULETS. We were treated to nice looks at ANDEAN GUAN and an ANDEAN PYGMY-OWL even posed for a few photos. On the way out of the reserve, we were surprised by a couple SHORT-EARED OWLS, perhaps active during the middle of the afternoon because of the heavy fog. Closer to Tandayapa Bird Lodge, our base for the next five nights, we stopped in the Alambi Valley for SLATY-CAPPED CHAT-TYRANT, MASKED TROGON, and WHITE-CAPPED DIPPER.

Jan. 8  Day two was a bit rainy, but a little water couldn’t stop us from birding! We began the morning along the Milpe road, where a cooperative and very vocal LAUGHING FALCON provided the background music for our first few hours of birding. COLLARED TROGON, CHOCO TOUCAN, and YELLOW-BELLIED SISKIN also showed well, and Mike picked up a BAY WREN before we went into the Milpe Bird Sanctuary for a walk on the trails. Most folks had at least a quick look at en elusive ESMERALDAS ANTBIRD, and everyone had a great study of the fabulous CLUB-WINGED MANAKINS excitedly performing their wing-display. For lunch we went to a nice restaurant in the nearby town of Los Bancos, where the hummer feeders were loaded with GREEN THORNTAILS, and we attempted to wait out the rain. Eventually it became clear that the weather was not going to clear, so we went out after more birds anyway. On the old Nono-Mindo road, we found an awesome mixed flock with BLACK-CHINNED MOUNTAIN-TANAGERS and a PACIFIC TUFTEDCHEEK. We got back to the lodge a little wet, but no one seemed to notice after the great birds we’d seen.

Jan. 9  We started off with a visit to the hide at the lodge, and though it was a little quiet, pair of IMMACULATE ANTBIRDS and a PLAIN ANTVIREO were among the visitors.  After breakfast and some time watching 12-14 species of hummers from the patio, we spent the morning around the lodge on the trails, where a conspicuous group of perhaps six GOLDEN-HEADED QUETZALS caught our attention right away. Further up, on the Antpitta Trail we found a TYRANNINE WOODCREEPER, and from the overlook on the Nunbird Trail, Jen spotted a PLAIN-BREASTED HAWK perched in a snag. A CANADA WARBLER, perhaps the same bird that spent last winter in the area, was a good find for the west slope, and a small, confiding group of TRICOLORED BRUSH-FINCHES moved through the understory right by the lodge. In the afternoon we headed back up the Alambi Valley for a bit more rain, a WHITE-WINGED TANAGER and our first PLATE-BILLED MOUNTAIN-TOUCAN of the tour. Heading back to the lodge for dinner we all had a good look at an ANDEAN COCK-OF-THE-ROCK on her way up the valley.

Jan. 10  We spent a dry morning in the upper Tandayapa Valley in and around the Bellavista Reserve. The action was fast and furious, and TOUCAN BARBETS, GRASS-GREEN TANAGERS, CRIMSON-MANTLED WOODPECKERS, STRIPED TREEHUNTERS, GREEN-AND-BLACK FRUITEATERS, SEPIA-BROWN WRENS, a BLACK-CAPPED TYRANNULET, and a STRONG-BILLED WOODCREEPER were just a few of the many species we found in the mixed flocks. One of the best birds of the day was POWERFUL WOODPECKER; we watched a pair of these huge, spectacular woodpeckers foraging on the Research Station Road. A UNICOLORED (BLACKISH) TAPACULO allowed itself to be seen as it sang from the dense roadside vegetation, a rather rare event.

Jan. 11  Today we hit the lowlands near the town of Pedro Vicente Maldonado. Early on, Jen spotted a BRONZE-WINGED PARROT perched in the open, and everyone had good scope views. Birding along the Rio Silanche in secondary forest we encountered our first big mixed flock, containing ORANGE-FRONTED BARBETS, SCARLET-RUMPED CACIQUES, and TAWNY-CRESTED, SCARLET-BROWED, and DUSKY-FACED TANAGERS. A nearby STUB-TAILED antbird skulking in the undergrowth was seen well by some (ahem, Kathy) and briefly (ie: not as well!) by most of the rest of us. More mixed flocks provided PACIFIC ANTWREN, BLACK-STRIPED WOODCREEPER, and YELLOW-TUFTED DACNIS, and from the canopy tower we picked up a PLUMBEOUS KITE as it perched briefly in a tall cecropia. We all enjoyed the antics of a lek of WHITE-BEARDED MANAKINS as they snapped, crackled, and popped in full view. Mid-afternoon, a PLUMBEOUS FOREST-FALCON surprised everyone by flying clear across the parking lot, but unfortunately this rare and secretive bird vanished before everyone could see it. My view consisted only of the lower half of the bird, but I was able to see the diagnostic tail pattern! A RUFOUS-TAILED JACAMAR showed well nearby, a nice consolation for those who missed the forest-falcon. At the end of the afternoon we were still picking up new birds, and a few of the late additions to today’s list of well over a hundred species were WESTERN SLATY-ANTSHRIKE, DOT-WINGED ANTWREN, and RED-RUMPED WOODPECKER.

Jan. 12  The final day of birding on the tour was filled with all-star species. Arriving at the Paz de Aves Refuge near Nanegalito, Angel Paz soon informed us that there was an OILBIRD that had been roosting above one of the trails for four days straight. Of course we went straight out to look for it, and luck was with us - the bird was sleeping peacefully in the shade for at least another day. YELLOW-BREASTED ANTPITTA was cooperative as usual, but it took quite a bit of effort to locate María, the famous GIANT ANTPITTA. Perhaps she was nesting, but whatever the reason, she was very reluctant to come to the usual feeding spot. So we descended further down the valley to try another location, and it was a good thing because a BARRED FOREST-FALCON flew right over our heads and perched in the canopy nearby for a minute or two! Eventually María showed up just beside the trail, and we went up to check out the hummer feeders, where we found VELVET-PURPLE CORONET and EMPRESS BRILLIANT. After some café con bolones, we went to look for the ORANGE-BREASTED FRUITEATER. As we were sifting through a mixed flock we picked up an ANDEAN SOLITAIRE, and Dan spotted a PLUSHCAP foraging far below at the forest edge. Then the fruiteater started to call, and we began scanning intensely. Suddenly there it was. “I’ve got it,” announced Donn, and perched near the top of one of the highest trees in plain sight was the unbelievably bright male ORANGE-BREASTED FRUITEATER. A couple of BROAD-WINGED and ROADSIDE HAWKS rounded out our visit, and we headed back to the lodge for lunch and to pack up. Later in the afternoon, our last stop on the way back to Quito was near the town of Calacali, where we birded some arid scrub. Luck was still with us and we found more than a few new birds, including RUSTY FLOWERPIERCER, BURROWING OWL, and the extremely rare and localized WHITE-TAILED SHRIKE-TYRANT. We ended a successful tour with a farewell dinner at the hotel in Quito, and POWERFUL WOODPECKER was voted the favorite bird of the trip in a landslide!
