Peru: Manu and Machu Picchu10 - 27 July 2008Tour leader: José Illánes White-tufted Sunbeam
I always love doing this tour, the birds, wildlife, scenery, and
wilderness experience of Manu always make it a great trip, not to
mention Machu Picchu. I knew most of the participants from previous
Tropical Birding tours I have led, and enjoyed getting to know the
newcomers. We all arrived the night before and enjoyed a nice dinner,
getting hyped up about the days to come.
July 11
We took an early flight to Cusco and headed out with a box lunch to
Huacarpay lakes, about an hour from the hotel. We saw almost all of our
target species like Plumbeous Rail, White-tufted Grebe, Andean
Negrito, Puna Ibis, Puna and Cinnamon Teals, Yellow- winged Blackbird,
Cinereous Harrier, Wren-like Rushbird, Many-colored Rush Tyrant (the
most beautiful of all flycatchers), Rusty-fronted Canestero, Giant
Humingbird, White-browed Chat-Tyrant, Yellow-billed Tit-Tyrant, and
Peruvian Sierra-Finch. The Bearded Mountaineer made us sweat a little,
but with a little work we finally found it by the scrubby forest edge.
Mountain Caracara
July 12
Another early start as we started up famous Manu road. Our first stop
was a dry little village high up in the Andes, where we saw
Chestnut-breasted Mountain-finch, Mourning and Peruvian Sierra-Finches,
Streak-fronted Thornbird, Black-throated Flowerpiercer, Black-tailed
Trainbearer. We didn’t see only birds, but also got the
chance to see nice scenery of the mountain and the Quechua people who
live so high up. On the way we also picked up the Rufous-webbed
Bush-Tyrant, Spot-winged Pigeon, Andean Flicker, and a Slender-billed
Miner. Our next stop was just past the small native town of
Paucartambo; it was quite a productive little place. We found
Golden-billed Saltator, Green-tailed Trainbearer, Tufted Tit-Tyrant,
White-winged Black-Tyrant, but the most wanted bird was the endemic
Creamy- crested Spinetail, which we saw well. We were lucky to see at
least fifteen Mitred Parakeets perched close by and even a ridiculous
Sword-billed Hummingbird. We topped the pass and started gradually
going down the road into the wet temperate cloudforest. The species
that occur in this area are quite different, and we got Grass-green
Tanager, Hooded Mountain-Tanager, Mountain Cacique, Violet-throated
Starfrontlet, Andean Guan, Black-faced Brush-Finch, Rufous-breasted
Chat-Tyrant, Red-crested Cotinga, Moustached Flowerpiercer, Yungas
Pygmy-Owl, and a pair of very close and fantastic Gray-breasted
Mountain-Toucans. Thanks to all the birds we were finding, we arrived a
bit late to Cock-of-the-rock Lodge, but seeing a Rufous-banded Owl
along the way made it worth it.
Black-faced Brush-Finch
July 13
Before breakfast we made the ritual visit to the famous Andean
Cock-of-the-rock lek that is very near the lodge to watch the beautiful
displaying males. After that, we birded a bit along the road and found
Chestnut-backed Antshrike, Two-banded Warbler, Ash-browed Spinetail,
Dusky-green Oropendola, Chestnut-breasted Wren, Golden-collared
Honeycreeper, Golden-eyed Flowerpiercer, Yungas Manakin, Orange- eared,
Yellow- bellied, Spotted, and Paradise Tanagers. After our breakfast we
went for a walk on one of the trails; it was quite productive with a
few feeding flocks, and we got Yellow-throated, Golden, and
Beryl-spangled Tanagers, Golden-headed Quetzal, Bronze-green Euphonia,
Black-eared Hemispingus, Olive-backed Woodcreeper, Ornate and
Yellow-breasted Antwrens, and a pair of beautiful Versicolored Barbets.
The hummer feeder brought species like Violet-fronted Brilliant,
Many-spotted Hummingbird, Booted Racket-tail, and Wire-crested
Thorntail. After lunch and a break, we went down the road from the
lodge, just a few minutes drive. We found some common birds like
White-capped Dipper, Black-goggled Tanager, and White-necked Thrush,
but the sightings of a couple of Amazonian Umbrellabirds and an endemic
Peruvian Piedtail really made the day.
Black-and-chestnut Eagle
July 14
Taking a packed breakfast and lunch, we went up the Manu road from the
lodge very early. Near the Pillahuata reserve we had brekky, but before
that we did a little birding while the driver set up the table. We saw
Fulvous Wren, Rufous-bellied Bush-Tyrant, Bolivian Tyrannulet,
Scarlet-breasted Mountain-Tanager, and Fawn-breasted Tanager. After our
breakfast we walked down the road, and soon a mixed feeding flock
brought some great birds: Capped Conebill, White-browed Hemispingus,
Barred Becard, White-throated and White-banded Tyrannulets,
Rust-and-yellow and Golden collared Tanagers, Chestnut-breasted
Mountain-Tanager, Sierran Elaenia, Band-tailed Fruiteater,
Streak-throated Bush-Tyrant. While walking down, Keir spotted a
Black-and-chestnut Eagle, and when I played the recording, this big
eagle came to sit very close by the roadside. That was kind of
exciting! Blue-banded Toucanet was also nice, but the pair of antpittas
that we called in with a lot of work really stole the show: the cute
Rusty-breasted and the endemic Red-and-white. Of course we also saw
some other common species as well in our journey, like
Gould’s Inca, Yungas Pygmy-Owl, Maroon-chested Chat-Tyrant,
Yellow-billed Cacique, Montane Woodcreeper, Blue-backed Conebill,
Crimson-mantled Woodpecker and Highland Motmot. Another good day.
Band-tailed Fruiteater (female)
July 15
Our plan was to go birding down the lower Manu road from the
Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge to the end of the road, then crossing over to
Amazonia Lodge. This got us into a zone with lots of new birds. The
first stop gave us Black-faced Dacnis, Warbling Antbird, Bluish-fronted
Jacamar, Stripe-chested Antwren, Yellow-browed Tody-Flycatcher, and a
bit far the down we got a little mixed feeding flock with some
wonderful species: Golden-bellied Warbler, White-browed Antbird,
Red-billed Scythebill, Cerulean-capped Manakin, and Montane
Foliage-gleaner. Working some bamboo patches farther down was
productive with Bamboo Antshike, Rusty-fronted and Black-backed
Tody-Flycatcher. In the last bit of forest before the river we found
Southern Nightingale-Wren, Dark-breasted Spinetail, and Black-throated
Antbird, before finally arriving at the lodge around dark.
July 16
Amazonia Lodge has a mix of lowland Amazonian forest and hill forest,
and it just crawls with antbirds, antshrikes, and antwrens. But before
we got to dealing with them, we enjoyed some birds by the lodge, where
they jave some great hummer-friendly flowers and feeders. The rare
Rufous-webbed Brilliant was the star, but we also saw Gray-breasted
Sabrewing, Rufous-crested Coquette, White-necked Jacobin, Blue-tailed
Emerald, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, and Golden-tailed Sapphire. At the
fruit table some beautiful birds come to feed quite early: Masked
Crimson Tanager, Red-capped Cardinal, Speckled Chachalaca and some of
the other common tanagers. Later on we went for walk on one the trails,
this wide trail made forest birding a bit easier and was good for
Lafresnaye’s and Black-banded Woodcreepers, Chestnut-eared
Aracari, Black-tailed Trogon, Black-throated Toucanet, Pygmy Antwren,
Johannes’s Tody-Tyrant, Band-tailed Manakin,
Goeldi’s and White lined Antbirds, and Little Cuckoo.
Something amazing happen while we were standing on the jeep trail
waiting for the Goeldi’s Antbird. We saw at least three or
four Collared Peccary cross the track, and after about five minutes
they were followed by an incredibly shy Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo.
Sadly not everyone in the group saw it, but any sighting of this
fantastic bird on a tour is something special. On the way back to the
lodge, we got a feeding flock with Turquoise and Paradise Tanagers,
Sepia-capped Flycatcher. Spending time on these was a good idea as
nearby on the ground were a Black-spotted Bare-eye and a Razor-billed
Curassow. By the little lake was the amazing prehistoric-looking
Hoatzin and a Rufescent Tiger-Heron. Our afternoon session was also
very productive, with Undulated and Great Tinamous walking along the
trail, some Blue-headed Macaws feeding very low at Philodendron
berries, a trogon trio with Amazonian, Violaceous, and Blue-crowned
Trogons, not to mention Chestnut-crowned and Striolated Puffbirds. To
end the day we went back to the jeep trail to scan for the
Ground-Cuckoo, but we didn’t get it despite seeing 70+
Collared Peccaries, which was still an impressive sight in
it’s own right.
July 17
We spent the morning higher up in the hill forest, and found some good
forest birds including Rusty-belted Tapaculo, Sooty Antbird, Pectoral
Sparrow, Amazonian Oropendola, Long-tailed Woodcreeper, Rufous-tailed
Antwren, and Round-tailed Manakin. The small tower on the hill
overlooking Amazonia Lodge provided us with views of Golden-collared
Toucanet, Red-billed and Sooty-headed Tyrannulets, Green Honeycreeper,
Fine-barred Piculet, Epaulet Oriole, White-lored Euphonia, and soaring
White Hawks and King Vultures. Back on solid ground, an understory
flock had Olive Tanager, White-winged Shrike-Tanager, Red-stained
Woodpecker, and Bluish-slate and Dusky-throated Antshrikes. Later in
the afternoon after our delicious lunch we went for another walk along
the creekside trail, where there was a singing Sunbittern. We close out
the day with nice views of Blue-crowned Motmot, Chestnut-crowned
Foliage-gleaner, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, and at least five roosting
Starred Wood-Quails.
Sunbittern
July 18
We had a couple more hours to bird before getting on the boat for the
ride down the Madre de Dios, and managed to find Southern
Chestnut-tailed Antbird, Fiery-capped Manakin, Tropical Screech-Owl on
a day roost, and the tiny Short-tailed Pygmy-Tyrant. Going down the
river was wonderful, even for me, because as we were going down we
could see how the vegetation was changing, and our boatmen were very
good. We also saw some riverside birds like a bunch of Fasciated
Tiger-Herons, Little Blue-Heron, Pied Plover, Greater Yellow-headed
Vulture, Plumbeous Kite, Swallow-wing Puffbird, Large-billed and
Yellow-billed Terns, Ringed, Amazon, and Green Kingfishers, Great
Black-Hawk, Horned Screamer, and even a flying Jabiru, not a common
bird here. Once we arrived at Manu Wildlife Center, we had time to
check in and relax a bit before dinner.
July 19
It is always great to be in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, but
for me this is home, just in different country. On this first morning,
we went to the famous macaw lick that is about 40 minutes downriver. We
watched the Red-and-green and Scarlet Macaws along with their smaller
cousins, Mealy, Yellow-crowned, Blue-headed, and Orange-cheeked
Parrots, as they came to eat clay that helps them digest their diet of
bitter fruit. On the river edge we also got the chance to see
Orange-headed Tanager, Little Ground-Tyrant, River Tyrannulet, and
Muscovy Duck, and walking back to the boat we got Blue-and-yellow
Macaw, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, and Long-billed Starthroat. Next we went
to try for some special birds in the bamboo across the river, and
lucked out with Rufous-fronted Anthrush. Back at the lodge, we walked
on the grid after lunch, which was quite productive with Screaming
Piha, Black-faced Antbird, Plain-throated, Gray and White-flanked
Antwren, Red-crowned Ant-Tanager, Cinereous Mourner, Elegant
Woodcreeper, Red-necked Woodpecker, Dusky-throated Antshrike and
Olive-backed Foliage-gleaner.
Blue-headed Parrots on the Madre de Dios clay lick.
July 20
We headed back to the grid, which is always one of the best trails, and
quickly got a great sighting of the weird Hairy-crested Antbird at an
army antswarm. A fixed flock in the subcanopy held Chestnut-winged
Hookbill, Chestnut-winged Foliage-gleaner, Grayish Mourner,
Yellow-crested Tanager, Chestnut-shouldered and Sclater’s
Antwrens, Golden-green Woodpecker, Plain Softtail, and the flock leader
White-fronted Nunbird. A few more birds we saw this morning were
Golden-crowned and White-crested Spadebills, White-bellied Tody-Tyrant,
and Rufous-capped Anthrush. Later in the afternoon we went back to a
different bamboo forest where we saw Peruvian Recurvebill, Manu
Antbird, and Dusky-tailed Flatbill. A tower had been built here
recently, and we went up it for dusk, seeing Plum-throated Cotinga,
White-bellied Parrot and a beautiful sunset.
Hairy-crested Antbird
July 21
With early breakfast we went to Cocha Camungo, where there’s
a tall wooden tower by a lake. We got some canopy species like,
Lemon-throated Barbet, Cobalt-winged and Tui Parakeets, Casqued
Oropendola, Black-tailed Tityra, White-browed Purpletuft, Crowned
Slaty-Flycatcher, White-lored Euphonia, Ivory-billed Aracari,
Yellow-browed Tody-flycatcher, Bare-necked Fruitcrow, White-necked
Puffbird, and Spangled Cotinga. After the tower we birded the edge of
the lake, and there were some good birds like Purus Jacamar, the
beautiful Fine-barred Piculet, Amazonian Streaked-Antwren (who always
lives close to the water), plus both Gray-headed and Snail Kites
soaring above us. Heading back to the river, we also spotted White-eyed
Attila and Straight-billed Woodcreeper. After lunch, we went to a
different lake called Cocha Blanca, and before we even got there we
scored at least ten Pale-winged Trumpeter feeding close to the trail.
For some, the target species this afternoon wasn’t a bird,
but the Giant Otter, which likes this kind of the fresh water lake.
Luckily we were able to see a couple of them fishing in front of the
boat. There were birds there too of course, and we got the chance to
see Long-billed Woodcreeper, Least Grebe, Ladder-tailed Nightjar,
Pale-vented Pigeon, Horned Screamers and even the tough Gray-breasted
and Rufous-sided Crakes, which responded well to playback and came
right out in the open for a change.
July 22
We got to start a bit later today since we weren’t going very
far. The lodge’s metal canopy tower is only about a ten
minute walk away. From this high lookout we saw a lot of forest canopy
species we weren’t able to see anywhere else. Some of them
included Rufous-bellied Euphonia, Lineated Woodcreeper, Black-bellied
Cuckoo, White-throated and Channel-billed Toucans, and Curl-crested
Aracari, Bare-necked Fruitcrow, Green-and-gold Tanager, Rose-fronted
Parakeet, and Paradise and Turquoise Tanagers. Once the activity died
down a bit, we walked a trail along a little creek. There was a
sub-canopy mixed feeding flock with Pink-throated Becard, Rufous-tailed
and Slender billed-Xenopes, Opal-crowned, Opal-rumped, and Masked
Tanagers, and Blue-backed Manakin. We decided to come back to the same
trail after lunch to look for a few of the species we were missing, and
were moderately successful with Stipple-throated Antwren, Rufous-tailed
Foliage-gleaner, White-chinned Woodcreeper, Rufous-tailed Flatbill, and
beautiful views of them all.
July 23
It was mostly a travel day as we went by boat to Boca Manu and took a
small plane back to Cusco. From here we drove to Ollantaytambo, a very
touristy town. The White-bellied Hummers and Rusty-flowerpiercers in
the garden of the hotel were new, but we took it easy this afternoon
since it would be a long day tomorrow.
July 24
We got early starting this morning since our destination, Abra Malaga
is located an hour and half driving from Ollantaytambo. I know from
previous trips how bad the weather can be here (snow and ice), but
today we were lucky and had a totally clear day with amazing views of
the mountains. The good weather gave us a chance to explore the
Polylepis forest and scrub that dots the puna grassland. Most of the
birds were new: White-winged and Bar-winged Cinclodes, Cordilleran
Canastero, Giant, White-browed, and Cinereous Conebills, White-throated
Tyrannulet, Black-throated and Masked Flowerpiercers, Brown-backed and
D’Orbigny’s Chat-Tyrants, White-browed and Tawny
Tit-Spinetails, and wonderful views of the skulking Stripe-headed
Antpitta and Puna Tapaculo. At this elevation walking can be tough, but
at least almost all of it was downhill. Farther down we spotted
White-browed and Taczonowski’s Ground-Tyrants, Andean
Lapwing, at least two soaring Andean Condors, and a bunch of the
endemic White-tufted Sunbeam. With everyone tired out after the long
walk, we stopped a bit earlier than usual and rested in the hotel.
July 25
W enjoyed a later start than usual and did some birding by the hotel,
finding Black-tailed Trainbearer, White-bellied Hummingbird, Black-back
Grosbeak, Golden billed Saltator, and Greenish Yellow-Finch. After
breakfast we took the first train to Aguas Calientes, watching the
usual White-capped Dippers and Torrent Ducks on the way. After
deboarding, we took a bus up to Machu Picchu, met up with our local
cultural guide, and enjoyed a guided tour of the ruins. After this
great experience and delicious lunch we concentrated more on birding.
Inca Wren was one of the cooler birds that we saw just outside the
restaurant, but much farther down we saw some absolutely top birds like
Masked Fruiteater, Ocellated Piculet, Green-and-white Hummingbird,
Variable Antshrike, Versicolored Barbet, White-eared Solitaire, and
Sclater’s and Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulets before returning to
the luxurious Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.
Masked Fruiteater
July 26
Some of the best birding is right on the ground of our hotel. They have
a nice patch forest and hummer feeders, so after a late breakfast we
strolled around and saw Silver-backed, Saffron-crowned, Hepatic,
Golden-naped, and Slaty Tanagers, Capped Conebill, and White-throated
Quail-Dove. Lots of hummers were coming to the feeders, like Booted
Racket-Tail, Gould’s Inca, Long-tailed Sylph, and
Chestnut-breasted Coronet. After lunch we took the train back to Cusco
and spent another night in this unique city.
July 27
We all knew that today was our last day of the trip, so we got an early
fly to Lima and headed south along the sea, seeing Coastal Miner,
Peruvian Booby and three gull species, Band-tailed, Gray, and Kelp,
even before getting to Pucusana. Water levels were really high when we
got there, so had to wait a bit before going out in the boat, but
enjoyed the pretty Inca Terns that were flying around everywhere while
waiting. Once on the boat in the harbor, it was easy to find Guanay and
Red-legged Cormorants and Peruvian Pelican, and a bit farther out, a
couple of Humboldt Penguins. Coming back to the dock, we found a
Peruvian Seaside Cinclodes hopping around the edge of the water. On the
way back to Lima we stopped in a few places where we got Amazilia
Hummingbird, Long-tailed Mockingbird, at least twelve Peruvian
Thick-knees, Short-tailed Field-Tyrant, Great and Pied-billed Grebes,
Black-crowned Night-Heron, and Cinnamon Teal. That was the end of the
trip, which I think was really successful. I would like to say thanks
to all of the participants for helping make it a wonderful trip.
