The bizarre and fascinating Hoatzin, common around lakes and rivers. All photos by Nick Athanas.

Another fun trip with loads of special birds. The Manu area has such a wide variety of habitats and birds that it's really hard to have a bad trip!  None of us will ever forget the Black-and-chestnut Eagle that soared so close above us in perfect light, or the Black-streaked Puffbird that perched so close you could almost reach out and scratch its head, or the amazing variety of antbirds, nearly every one seen very well, or the Rufous-fronted Antthrush strutting back and forth across the trail as we waited for our delayed plane, victory snatched from the jaws of defeat. This year we were fortunate with the weather - not too cold in the highlands and not too hot in the lowlands, and it only rained at night. The hospitality and the food at the lodges were exceptional and the whole trip went as smoothly as could be hoped.

This year we were able to tie our trip in with a pelagic off the coast of Lima. We were lucky with fairly calm (but not too calm) seas and birds galore with many lifers seen by all. Highlights were the beautiful Cape Petrel and Ringed Storm-Petrel as well as plenty of Waved Albatrosses and several Peruvian Diving-Petrels.

This report is briefer than normal because I have so little time to write it up before heading off to other places. However, I'll share some photos from the tour to help tell the story...

The fruit feeders at Amazonia Lodge offer endless
entertainment as tanagers and other species interact.
Here a female Silver-beaked Tanager, a Palm
Tanager, and a Blue-gray Tanager all squabble over
the same banana.
The Rufous-crested Coquette
is one of the star attractions
of Amazonia. We found this
male in a dead tree a short
walk from the lodge.

The Masked Crimson Tanager was one
of the more gaudy species we found
around Amazonia. It was especially
common here, and often noisy flocks of
a dozen birds decended on a banana,
devouring it within minutes...
One of our best mornings was spent
in the canopy platform at Manu
Wildlife Center, where we had birds
all around us for several hours. Here
a group of White-bellied Parrots sit
preening on a nearby snag.

We took a chance with the macaw
lick, since a change in the river's
course has grounded the floating
blind. We lucked out and most of
activity happened very near to us, and
we saw Red-and-green Macaws and
six other parrot species perched.
When we weren't looking at parrots, there
were other things to see too, such as this
alert Cocoi Heron, several other herons and
egrets, a pair of Orinoco Geese, a Pied
Lapwing, Drab Water-Tyrants, Bat Falcons,
a Great Black-Hawk, various swallows and
swifts, and a Caiman.
We spent part of a day in the Lachay nature reserve north of Lima. The
main part of the reserce held some treats like the cute Least Seedsnipe
and the endemic Thick-billed Miner, but we also made a side trip to a
dry cactus-studded canyon (pictured above) to look for the very local
Cactus Canastero. We found an active pair hopping around on the rocks.

The Lima pelagic offered a rare chance to see
some of the seabirds of the Humboldt Current.
The beautiful Cape Petrel was one of the
favorites. We started seeing them about 20
miles out.
White-chinned Petrels are one of the more
common pelagic seabirds of the southern
oceans, but we still enjoyed seeing them so
well. We checked all that came close for
black bill-tips, hoping in vain for a Westland.
